LIBROPHILIA!
All sorts of Books for all sorts of Bookworms
DYSLEXIA-FRIENDLY
We had so many good comments about our dyslexia-friendly focus in FUSE Spring 2016
that this time all our Librophilia! choices are designed, edited and illustrated to make
reading fun if you have dyslexia. (Or even if you don’t!) The paper colour, page layouts,
fonts and the stories themselves were all tested by children before being printed.
Into The Storm
by Stephen Potts; illustrated by Nigel Dobbyn
This story is based on a boy
called David who goes on a
boating trip with his Father.
In their adventure they see
dolphins, have fires, go into
whirlpools and David learns how
to be a real sailor.
This isn’t the kind of book I
normally read but I actually
found it rather interesting. It is
from the ‘FYI’ series of ‘Fiction
With Stacks Of Facts’ and it
definitely has a lot of good
information about how to sail a
boat. In every chapter they have
a page or so of facts from the
story. For example, they explain
about tides, parts of a boat and
that a sea chart is like a map.
I also liked the fact file pages
about the Author and Illustrator.
Anyone who likes Swallows and
Amazons will no doubt treasure
Into The Storm, however this
story is more for boys because
there are no girls whatsoever
involved. Also it does have quite
a sudden ending.
I really liked this book because
it has a lot of day-to-day
lessons in it, such as you should
try to learn how to do things
yourself and not always rely
on somebody else. This is how
David knows how to cope when
his Father gets knocked out!
