English artist Richard Hamilton is believed to have exhibited the first works of Pop Art in 1955 . By the late 1950s , the style was becoming popular in Europe ' s big cities and had begun to take hold in the USA .
Pop Art uses images from television , comics and everyday
advertising and puts them in bold colours , cartoon designs or unreal settings .
50 years ago , in 1967 , the famous American artist Andy Warhol created his iconic screen-print portfolio of the actress Marilyn Monroe . It used a technique like this Banana picture where different , unreal colours boldly overlay the same image .
