5 Day Winter Road to Adventure
Bicentennial Museum, Fort Chipewyan
Located on the southwest tip of Lake Athabasca, Fort Chipewyan is a perfect
place to leave your daily stresses behind and experience the remote beauty,
history and culture of one of Alberta’s most isolated and northern communities.
Established as a trading post in 1788 by the Northwest Trading Company, Fort
Chipewyan is Alberta’s oldest settlement. So remote is Fort Chipewyan, it can
only be accessed by land in the winter on a 280-kilometre road made entirely
of snow and ice. On this adventure vacation you will follow the winter road
through the unique and amazing landscapes of the boreal forest and sand
dunes and travel over frozen rivers, marshes and the vast Peace-Athabasca River
Delta. With a bit of luck, you may see hawks, owls, moose, bison and lynx along
the way.
