HIKING • SAFFRON CAVE View from Hout Bay Corner. The wide, sandy mouth slopes upwards into an extremely well-protected sort of alcove with plenty of nooks and crannies for shelves and storage. Someone (long ago, no doubt) had arranged some rocks for a cooking fire, and there was also a rather odd but modern(ish) blanket in the dust, too. We thought of bringing it down, but also thought it may have been there for a reason, so left it. There are two, well-used, bird’s-nests in the ceiling, probably of red-winged starlings but a twitcher would be more able to identify the species by the nests. Facing out of the cave, the left ‘lip’ is covered in thick moss and obscured by a delightful little copse of saffron trees, their bright orange bark contrasting beautifully with the bright green moss. We thought that, in lieu of us not being able to find the cave’s
