HIKING • SAFFRON CAVE
H
uh? There’s no such thing as Saffron Cave on
Table Mountain!
That’s what all the experienced hikers and Park officials
are going to say when they see the title of this hike. And
they would all be quite correct.
But when we got to this cave we didn’t know its name
and no-one seemed to be able to give it one.
Some of Bruce’s buds at the Hout Bay Harriers Running
Club mentioned this cave to him and it really sounded like
a good place to visit so we decided to give it a go.
Verbal directions are much like the truth: one person
describes the route; one person hears the route; and
the actual route lies somewhere in between. To be fair
to the runners though, they gave us two options and we
unwittingly chose the lesser-defined one. Anyway, we
ended up doing some scrambling on loose, stony and
sandy paths before finding the cave. But when we did it
was well worth the extra effort.
We thought this was the best cave we’d seen on
the mountain that we didn’t have to ‘spelunk’ to. This
good, family-sized, sheltered cave would have made an
excellent home for that early thominid hikus extremus.
