Lyn Gilbert studied Fine Art at the
University of Pietermaritzburg, graduating
in 1963. She then went on to have a
career in illustration. Gilbert returned to
her Fine Art path completing a Master’s
Degree in 1983 at Rhodes University while
balancing being a single parent to two
boys and working as an art facilitator in the
greater rural Eastern Cape.
For the last decade Gilbert has finally
found the space to dedicate herself full
time to her painting. This body of work is a
culmination of a life-time of experience and
processing. Eschewing the idea of working
from a preconceived notion, Gilbert
arrives at each blank canvas allowing the
subconscious to guide brush mark, colour
and form; and to direct the image and
theme. The exhibition falls into allegorical
figurative and symbolic compositions and
landscapes. Gilbert’s approach is to be in
the environment, to absorb and later within
the studio, that which was experienced
sensually, is distilled into a new form – a
landscape of the mind.
