STEMing the tide
No one working in energy and fuel
distribution will underestimate the vital
role played by science, technology,
engineering and mathematics in
powering that world.
But as companies look to stay
ahead in the future energy game,
the demand for staff with STEM
qualifi cations grows ever larger.
Now faced with a major skills
shortage in engineering and technology,
several initiatives are being designed
to encourage more young people to
engage with STEM subjects.
Across the world Shell’s
#makethefuture campaign is attracting
the attention of the energy conscious
millennials best able to assist the
company in the pursuit of a cleaner and
more sustainable energy future.
Going back to school; Greenergy
partnered with Future First earlier this
year to invite students in years 10, 11
and 12 to see
the company’s
operations fi rst
hand.
Speaking at the time, chief
executive Andrew Owens was keen
to ‘demonstrate the wide range of
opportunities available in the industry’.
Research from WISE, which enables
and energises people in business,
industry and education to increase
women’s participation, contribution and
success in STEM subjects, shows that
girls need to engage with these subjects
by the age of ten if they are to sustain
interest through their school career.
Interestingly, some are doing just
that as virtually all STEM subjects have
seen an increase in female students,
reports CaSE, the campaign for science
and engineering.
WISE is searching for an innovative
toy to nurture STEM enthusiasm in
girls from a young age; the winning toy
will receive an award at a ceremony in
London next month.
As one of Shell’s young female
engineers said: “The whole point of
engineering is to solve problems in
the world.” The more STEM uptake is
encouraged, the more we can solve!
