Fake news and manifestos
Armed with a mobile phone and a
Twitter account we can all contribute to
today’s news – real or fake.
Once upon a time the BBC was this
country’s news source. Starting with
twice daily wireless bulletins in 1922, the
BBC did not wish to get involved in the
costly business of collecting news so a
variety of news agencies were used.
Their attitude changed with
the 1926 general strike when several
government ministers were in favour of
taking over the BBC as ‘an instrument of
government policy’.
Before establishing a reputation
for ‘tracking down and slaying false
and dangerous rumours”, the BBC was
actually nicknamed the BFC (British
Falsehood Company) so nothing new
with fake news!
News with a potential impact on
our industry has recently come from pre
election manifestos.
Labour promises to take energy
back into
public
ownership,
ban fracking, cap energy bills at £1,000,
insulate four million homes and have
60% of UK heat/ power (transport
excluded) from zero carbon and
renewable sources by 2030.
Favouring ‘reliable and affordable
energy’ the Conservatives have pledged
to cap energy bills and to continue
support for North Sea oil & gas and
fracking.
The Lib Dems intend to pass a Zero
Carbon Britain Act and permanently
reduce energy bills with home insulation
improvements.
Wishing to generate 100% of its
power from renewables by 2035, Plaid
Cymru is looking at tidal lagoons around
the Welsh coast.
The Greens will ban fracking and the
‘reckless gamble’ with nuclear energy.
Collectively all parties have
the desire to achieve a carbon free
environment eventually. However, before
this energy evolution really gathers pace,
much fossil fuel will still need to come out
of the ground to ensure our world and
the global economy keeps turning.
