Oil still has legs As we start another new year in the fuel oil distribution industry, it is encouraging to know that oil still has legs! These glad tidings come from the International Energy Agency which, whilst acknowledging that the world’s energy is in a state of flux, still sees oil demand growth remaining ‘robust up until the mid-2020s’. Although global energy demand is expected to rise more slowly than in the past, overall demand is still expected to increase by 30% between now and 2040. The way in which the world will meet its growing energy requirements is expected to change dramatically. The use of natural gas will rise by 35% with renewables also rising rapidly and energy efficiency will continue to improve. A combination of industry initiatives and policy support is likely to result in the expansion of the global electric car fleet from two million today to 280 million by 2040, but as the fuel use in passenger vehicles transitions, oil demand in other sectors – trucks, aviation and shipping – is due to rise. The US is anticipating crude oil prices to average $57 dollars a barrel over 2018. The country will account for an 80% increase in global oil supply up to 2025. Confirming the decision to continue to curb oil output at OPEC’s November meeting, Saudi energy minister Khalid al-Falih said he felt ‘extremely optimistic about the short and long-term outlook for oil’. With respect to the future of the kerosene market, it is reassuring to know that OFTEC is fighting back against recent ‘misleading information’ published in the trade press – see page 4.
