Reactive maintenance costs more in the long run

FOR BUSINESSES THAT STORE AND TRANSPORT FUEL , KEEPING TANKS IN GOOD CONDITION SHOULD BE A PRIORITY SAYS IAN ROBERTS FROM ADLER & ALLAN
Below Ian gives his top tips for essential tank maintenance – to extend asset life , prevent pollution and meet legislation .
Fuel is an expensive and potentially dangerous commodity , so it is important that the vessels containing it are kept in top condition with tanks tested and maintained on a regular basis .
The best approach to any asset maintenance regime is a planned and preventative one . It has been proved time and time again that reactive maintenance costs more in the long run , with expensive repairs and lengthy periods of downtime far more likely . The following areas should also be checked on a regular basis :
• Separators : Separators must be checked annually for blockages , as well as cleaned and serviced with associated alarms also checked .
• Line & vapour recovery systems : By regularly testing lines and vapour recovery systems , the risk of tank failure , fuel contamination and potentially lethal leakage is minimised .
• Fuel quality : Fuel can either be tested on site , or using a dedicated laboratory . Ours is one of only a few UKAS accredited laboratories in the country . Should testing show contamination , fuel polishing can turn contaminated fuel back to usable quality , with onsite fuel polishing a relatively quick process , ideal for minimising downtime . Thanks to the latest techniques and mobile testing facilities , tank testing and maintenance has become a much quicker and less intrusive process . Combined with a planned and preventative maintenance regime , tank life can be extended , with minimal or no risk of pollution and stock losses . adlerandallan . co . uk

REDS GROUP recently responded to a spill at a fuel distribution depot where a client had lost red diesel during a delivery , contaminating 400 square feet of concrete and part-filling the tank ’ s bund .
The company ’ s spill responders arrived onsite within five hours and rapidly assessed the site conditions . Initial remediation was undertaken using absorbent granules and pads to remove free-phase fuel and limit migration .
The team prepared a site sensitivity report and undertook further works , including an additional application of absorbents to the contaminated concrete and a biodegradable surfactant on the impacted surface .
The concrete was jet washed and a vacuum tanker uplifted 5,700 litres of oil and water from the ground , together with phase product from the bund , and oily water from the onsite drainage system and interceptor .
Following the cleanup , REDS ’ responders used specialist equipment to monitor the volatile organic compounds and confirm all identified risks had been removed . redsgroup . co . uk
