Changing perceptions and rising to challenges in UK downstream

“ I want to get the exciting narrative back and to change the way UKPIA and the downstream oil sector is viewed ,” said Stephen who is really enjoying his new role .
“ This is the time to focus ahead and start embracing a vision for a future in which we have an important part to play .”
Joining the world of oil & gas in his ‘ 20s , a still youthful Stephen believes the industry can still be attractive to younger people .
Industry opportunities “ Some may see this as an old industry but through the use of automation and big data , for instance , it ’ s very technologically advanced . It is an extremely innovative sector and it offers vast opportunities and well paid , highly skilled jobs across the country . These range from engineers to lawyers , analysts and traders , technicians , drivers and accountants , to name but a few ,” said Stephen
“ It is therefore crucial for us to highlight the innovation and expertise of our young talent and to inspire the next generation of innovators . We will be supporting Government ’ s Year of the Engineer initiative , launched in response to an estimated shortfall of 20,000 engineering graduates a year in the UK , and are sponsors of this year ’ s International Women in Engineering Day , which takes place on 23rd June . Last December the All Party Parliamentary Group for the UK oil refining sector held an event in partnership with UKPIA to showcase the great opportunities available to young people in the sector , at which a delegation of young ambassadors for the sector came from across the country to discuss the industry ’ s future .

To reflect its commitment to become a broad energy company , rather than one focused only on oil , Norway ’ s Statoil plans to change its name to Equinor . The proposal will be put to the annual general meeting on May 15th ; Statoil already has the backing of the Norwegian state , which has a 67 % percent stake in the company .
