Liking retirement O n 28th February Dugie Campbell’s retirement was announced on Gleaner Oils’ Facebook page. Wishing the Argyll & Bute depot supervisor good luck in his retirement, the company thanked Dugie for his many years of hard work. Tanker operator puts up a fight W hen Carrie Marsh, owner of Newbury-based Marsh Fuels spotted a letter in the local paper suggesting that HGVs be barred from the town’s carnival, she was incensed. Feeling compelled to set the record straight, Carrie responded on behalf of the Berkshire town’s HGVs. Dear Sirs, Over 160 people liked this retirement photograph of Dugie which attracted several comments including customers who thanked him for this many years of fab service. Dugie started his career with Gleaner as a depot operative/driver on 14th August 1989. He was promoted to depot supervisor in 1994 before joining the Argyll & Bute depot in 2001. Married with three children, Dugie is a former Oban Saints midfielder. Martin, presenter of Homes Under the Hammer for almost 14 years, with partner Kirsty beside their new oil-fired boiler, look forward to ‘peace of mind for many winters to come’ I write in response to a letter in the Newbury Weekly News last week proposing that HGVs should be barred from the carnival. As a local HGV operator I feel the record should be set straight. I would direct you to an article in The Guardian (06/01/17) which helps to illustrate how “diesel cars emit 10 times more toxic pollution than trucks and buses.” Indeed, we spend vast amounts of money and downtime ensuring that our vehicles are maintained to the highest standard regarding both emissions and public safety. HGVs help to bring the ‘wow’ factor to events such as carnivals by elevating participants for all to see whilst maintaining a low speed to keep those participants safe. Having previously entered the Newbury Carnival with an +*9ÁRDW,UHFDOOWKHPDUVKDOOVZHUHTXLWHVWULFWZLWKWKH SROLFHDQGRWKHURIÀFLDOVGRLQJDVWHUOLQJMRENHHSLQJWKH public at a safe distance. If similar HGV carnival entrants are considered safe enough for the Lord Mayor of London’s annual procession – and in a low emissions zone I might add – it should be good enough for Newbury. Make the theme sustainable environmental safety- ÀUVWWUDQVSRUW and celebrate everything from foot to bicycle through to all types of environmentally friendly vehicles including HGVs. If we share our knowledge of environmentally sustainable transport, we can continue to help each other and each new generation to better protect our planet. Fuel Oil News | April 2017 7
