Problems that can arise if the defenders drop deep include that it can create a lot of space between the midfielders and the defenders allowing the opposition to play between the lines. If the opposition manage to find the striker they can hold the ball up and they will create an overload against the defensive unit. If the defenders do win the aerial ball and do not clear their lines the 2nd ball will be regained by the opposition's midfielders and put them in a position to attack.
