PROJECT SUMMARY :
Sun Devil Stadium is an outdoor football stadium located on Arizona State University ’ s campus in Tempe , AZ . ASU football is now undergoing a three-phase , $ 250 million renovation , which began in 2015 and is set to complete before opening season 2018 . What was once the home of the ( NFL ) Arizona Cardinals , now focuses on collegiate games only , with a chance for professional soccer games during football ’ s off-season . Outside of being ASU ’ s home field , the stadium annually operates the Fiesta Bowl and the Cactus Bowl for those teams selected . The estimated impact the Sun Devil Stadium has on the community , not counting the bowl games , is $ 10 million annually and with each Sun Devil victory roughly $ 1 million in academic donations . As one journalist put it , the ASU Stadium renovation is no longer an option , it ’ s an economic necessity .
The project is broken down into three phases , with the final phase ending before the start of the 2018 season . While the project has moved along tremendously well over the past year , there have been struggles along the way . The project difficulties include : structural bracing , landfill along north side , condensed schedule , and limited professional help such as electricians . According to our tour guide , the need for quality electricians resulted in them calling surrounding states . However , the Hunt / Sundt team has worked through every challenge and are well on their way to a successful project .
One major area that will not be renovated : the opposing team ’ s locker room . I mean , let ’ s not give them any warm feelings , right ?
