You can look at Tiger Woods ’ life and see what a tough game that golf can be on your psyche .
( ET ): Do you actually watch golf at the Phoenix Open ?
( MM ): Not as much as I ’ d like .
( ET ): Would you recommend that young people getting into the business should pick up golf as a professional development skill ? Have you found it has led to more business ?
( MM ): Yes , just like I mentioned with my kids , I think it ’ s a great opportunity to get a long period of quality time with people that you might not otherwise . My advice would be to not worry about how good you are , or be intimidated by those with whom you ’ re playing . You don ’ t have to be great to get out and enjoy the fellowship and experience .
( ET ): Any closing thoughts on how sports can make an impact on an individual ’ s future success ?
( MM ): Obviously character and teamwork would be the token answers , but I ’ d say as important as that is learning to handle pressure and hopefully embrace it . In my experience , the people that accomplish great things in either sports or business have the self-confidence to desire being in an environment where they have tremendous responsibility . A lot of people think they want that pressure of a game-winning free throw or an intense meeting , but they really don ’ t . I think sports help you learn that skill , and I think I felt more comfortable having responsibility at a young age as a result of golf .
