A Year to
Remember
Hurricane Harvey
On August 26, 2017, Hurricane Harvey hit Friendswood and dropped
torrential amounts of rainfall throughout our city over several days.
The Friendswood schools and community banded together to run
a shelter in the High School cafeteria that aided over 200 victims of
the flood. The victims including a local nursing home of nearly 70
medically fragile patients. The shelter ran continuously for four days
through generous donations of food, time, money, support, by the
entire Friendswood community. Clean up efforts were also coordinated
out of this “shelter.”
During that period, a cross was erected as the FISD version of a
“red cross.” The red cross was never removed and symbolizes the
strength of a community that remains Friendswood Strong.
Education Foundation Harvey Relief Fund and Grants
Over $230,000 were donated to the Education Foundation’s Harvey Relief Fund by businesses and
community members. These funds have been distributed to the 60 FISD employees affected by Harvey who
have requested assistance. Caring for these needs has helped our district recover quicker and rise up to
meet the challenge of caring for all our students during this difficult year.
