Students wrote what being trustworthy means to them , and why it is important , on paper to create links for a “ Chain of Trust .” This represents the importance of everyone doing their part to create an environment where all show trustworthiness , and the willingness to trust others . If one link breaks , the chain falls apart .

“ Character Corner ,” a school-wide program to help develop a student ’ s character that goes beyond the counseling program , was implemented at Windsong Intermediate this year . It is designed to engage teachers in the process of influencing the character of all students . In return , students are positively influencing each other , the school and the community as a whole .
Each week a student is selected to announce “ Character Corner Time .” During this 30-minute session , all teachers teach a lesson on the designated Character Trait of the Month such as Respect , Responsibility , Giving , or Gratitude . The month starts with a lesson that includes the teacher reading a mentor text about the specific character trait and students taking a self-evaluation to create selfawareness . Each week thereafter , teachers engage with students in activities around the school and community that highlight the Character of the Month .
Students take the time to gather as a class and practice giving and receiving genuine compliments on National Compliment Day .
This program has made a direct impact at the Windsong campus . Teachers have commented that kids have shown more kindness to one another and they are more self-aware of their behavior . They are also understanding the consequences of their actions . In the community , this program has shown students that they can make a difference regardless of their young age . They have assisted Harvey victims , coordinated food drives , initiated coat drives , and recognized the support that police and firefighters provide to the community . Teachers and students alike have enjoyed the Character Corner program and are demonstrating the true meaning of character .
