Friendship across Cultures Vol. 1 | Page 35

During this year our 2 classes were involved in a project between Moroccan students and Portuguese students. In the beginning, we sent letters about some topics that our teachers asked us to describe and now, in the final part of the project - 3rd term -, we, together with our teachers, are writing an opinion text about what we learned about the topic “Friendship across cultures”, a subject that has so many things to say.

We live in a world with numerous countries, with their different cultures and languages. With advanced technologies such as the telephone and e-mail, we can now communicate in greater distance, speed and convenience, so it’s easier to meet new people and make friends with people from different countries.

This Project helped us realise how English is, in fact, a Universal language, so, the communication between people from different countries gets easier. However we are also faced with a difficulty, our different schedules. We aren't talking about different time zones but different schedules to go to school or to go back home. Despite this complication, that could be considered a constraint to create this collaborative text, we managed to organize our lives and create this text.

Friendship across cultures, in our opinion, is really important because with this type of relationship we leave our comfort zone and have the pleasure of meeting someone with a different culture and a different lifestyle. We can open our eyes to a whole new world, a world with amazing people and a world of new possibilities.

In that way we grow “out of the box”, that means: we learn from teenagers all around the world, we are more prepared to understand and embrace other people that we may find throughout our personal and professional lives and who can have different customs and traditions.

It was really good to be a part of this Project and it was a different way to practise the English language and get to know more about about lifestyles and traditions of another country.
