Friendship across Cultures Vol. 1 | Page 30

Friendship is a relation of mutual affection between people. We all need friends…

Life is better with friends! Friendship is not limited to one culture, for example: christians can be friends to muslims, just like us! We want to learn new things about each other’s ways of living and how we look at life and this includes knowing about different religions, too.

In addition, we can learn a lot of things about a different country and share our experiences, values and interests.

1. Communication problems:

● Maybe the person that you want to be friends with doesn't have wifi or doesn't have a mobile phone, tablet or computer so both of you can communicate or he/she is shy;

● If you don't have a language in common it’s more difficult to communicate, so we must use English, for example, as our common language.

Having friends from different cultures is important because it promotes multiculturalism. Talking to a person from another country can help us know more about other cultures;

It helps us understand people from different races and religions. We learn how to live and deal with someone from another religion;

We learn more about their world, practices and traditions and it helps us to learn new languages;

It strengthens communication and it enables us to know more about each other.

Why is having a friendship from a different culture so important?

2. Religious problems:

Intolerance: some people don’t tolerate relationships between people from different religions.

Religion really isn't an issue for us, but some communities, in some countries, will still judge us.
