Case Study: Silverdale Kindergarten. BEFORE
Silverdale Kindy is located in a modern building in a new
subdivision. While it had a large outside play area, the
limited protection from the elements, compounded by
considerable dust and dirt from construction sites nearby,
were making life unpleasant. Further, due to the design and
aspect of the building, the office was so hot it was almost
unusable over the summer months.
Inside, the kindy had limited space, while outside there were
limited sheltered areas for children to play - and to add to
the pressure, another 160 children were on the waiting list!
The Head Teacher had been trying to find a suitable solution
for some time to provide more space and create more
usuable areas outside, while solving the issue of heat build
up in her office (and the classroom). She was seeking not just
shade, but to be able to close off the outdoor concreted
area immediately outside the classroom so that it could be
used year round for activities and play.
The challenge was to design a sheltered shade structure that
suited the modern style of the building, and was able to fit
around existing design features (such as the sloping steel
posts) while being both practical and aesthetically pleasing
to the eye.
The result...
Cooler in summer - classroom and office
Doubled available play space
No interruptions from the weather
A child friendly space children and
teachers love
A design that compliments the building,
incorporates louvres and side screens for
maximum climate control
