‘MAD’ Mike Whiddett is not your average drifter. The ex-FMX rider from NZ has a style all of his own. From mountain drift heli-shoots to custom car design, Mad Mike likes to get creative and think outside the box. Mike is no stranger to custom builds. Some of Mike’s previous drift car projects that you may have seen include the ‘MADBUL’ (a Mazda RX-7) and the ‘BADBUL’ (a Mazda RX-8). When it comes to building the cars Mike is totally hands-on. He even designs, prints and applies the liveries himself. For his latest project though, the Red Bull drifter has stepped up his game and created something next level. A Factory Mazda MX-5 convertible drift car – code-named RADBUL! The concept was to build a world class drift car that was going to be competitive against the best in the business. In 2015 Mad Mike is competing in the Formula Drift series, where the competition is fierce and a purpose-built, highly-tuned ride is a necessity. With factory backing from Mazda, a Twin Turbo 2.6-litre four-rotor 1000+ HP engine and some creative thinking, the team have managed to build something that can only be described as game-changing. The MX-5 was selected mainly due to its short, stable chassis. The large engine bay also allowed for the bigger, four-rotor engine (built by Pulse Performance Race Engineering in Whanganui, NZ) to be installed. No expense has been spared on the RADBUL, and every single part, hose and bolt used for this car is made by the best in the business. We think you’ll agree with us when we say the boys have created something very special here. Mad Mike: “A lot of people say the MX-5 is a hairdresser’s car, but I don’t think they’ll be saying that when this thing hits the track!” T /madmike.drift @madmike_drift @madmike_drift CAR PORN: ‘MAD’ MIKE WHIDDETT’S MX 5
