Reckless Inspiration
For a change this
month, this editorial has only been
the second most important piece of
writing on my to-do list. One of my
oldest friends recently made the unwise
decision of tasking me with a speech
at his wedding. And in-between getting
the balance of d**k jokes just right, it’s
been a good chance to look back on
some of my more, shall we say, reckless
days. Days which took a little inspiration
from one of this issue’s interviewees.
I always had a passion for action
sports – but one largely satisfied by
board-related activities in the early
days. That changed when I discovered
FMX. I have a vivid memory of watching
a blurry DVD and seeing a dude boost
the biggest dune at Glamis - and crash
like I’d never seen before. How did he
not die? That was my first encounter
with the Crusty Demons of Dirt and the
antics of Mr Seth Enslow – and I was
hooked! It wasn’t just the edge-of-
destruction riding that appealed about
the Crusty crew - it was their laid-back,
no-f**ks-given attitude and commitment
to doing things their own way.
And now we’re lucky enough to have
Seth Enslow in these very pages –
interviewed by Simon Makker for a
frank chat about his place in the golden
era of FMX. It’s honestly so cool to have
Seth in the magazine and I can’t thank
him enough for giving such an honest
and gnarly interview.
Elsewhere in this issue, BSB legend,
Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne, talks to Michael
Laverty about his storied career and
recent fight to recover from serious
injury. André Villa has the inside story
from the biggest show he’s run since
turning his hand to event organising.
We also heard from Monster Tech
3 Yamaha boss Herve Poncharal,
snowboarder Sebbe De Buck, skater
Tommy Flynn, enduro master Graham
Jarvis and the Birdhouse skate team.
For this issue’s product focus, we’re
looking at one of adidas’ newest styles:
the 3MC.
And as if that’s not enough, we’re even
giving away a pair of etnies shoes on
page 26!
Enjoy the issue.
