What are you most proud of?
My girlfriend! (laughs). Two times World
Champion at 25 years old is pretty
good. Taking over a bike park too.
There’s so many things.
Any regrets?
In 2012 maybe not putting the work in
that I should have after winning Worlds
and being treated like a king for a
winter and going to Vegas and here and
there, letting myself go a bit. I might be
a different place now if I hadn’t done
that. But I don’t think that’s a regret. I
don’t think you should have regrets.
Is downhill dead in the UK?
Speaking to a certain someone today,
he seems to think so. I’m in a good
position where I don’t have to rely on
downhill in the UK. But, I have a lot of
friends back home in the North East
that are reliant on the great domestic
series that we’ve got. We just need
British Cycling to step up. We have
such a great scene that’s all going to
go away if no one delves deep into their
wallets.
Anything to add to finish? Any words
of wisdom?
That’s a tough question! I’m 25 years
old making a strong living from riding
my bike for fun to a point. It’s obviously
not the same as it was 15 years ago
when it was strictly riding for fun... but if
you stick in there and do what you have
to do anyone can do it.
You don’t have to be the best rider if
you’ve got dedication and you’re willing
to put the work in. Anyone can do it.
They say if you enjoy your job you don’t
work a day in your life so... that’s just
what I’m doing. t
