their three team-members to
ride the contest - meaning there
were no inexperienced riders
there who were trying tricks on a
wing and a prayer. In the contest,
Dany Torres took the win with
his massive Double Hart Attack
Flip ahead of Frenchman Jeremy
Rouanet, whose hopes had rested
on a recently learned 540 off the
quarter pipe. Third place went to
Czech Republic’s Libor Podmol,
whilst Germany’s 16-year-old
prodigy Luc Ackermann threw
down a (very nearly over-rotated)
Surfer Take-Off Tsunami Flip which was enough to secure him
fourth place.
The Race & Style course was big,
fast and had a sick 4-pack line of
ramps in the middle, giving riders
loads of opportunity to throw
down some big tricks. Although
I think everyone’s money was on
multi- X Games Speed & Style
gold medallist Mike Mason to take
home the win, it was France’s
Brice Izzo who came out on top.
A wrong choice of racing line from
American Mason was enough
to effectively take him out of the
race.
This was enough to secure the
Rockwell FIM Freestyle of Nations
trophy for the Spanish team,
with a five-point margin over the
Czechs. The French team claimed
the remaining podium spot.
“(In) the first race I was perfect;
the second race I was starting to
get arm pump and by the third
race I was dead! So it was lucky
for me that some of the other
riders made mistakes.” Said Izzo.
The night was a huge success,
and it has definitely sparked a fire
of national pride in the world of
FMX for both the riders and the
fans alike. We will now have to
wait until next year to see if Spain
can hold onto their new title as
the best FMX team in the world!

The two Freestyle runs were
dominated by the Spanish
contingent, who really made the
most of the big open course. The
first contest was won by Maikel
Melero who threw down a super
clean, varied and stylish run, while
his training partner Dany Torres
triumphed in the second round
with his insane array of Backflip
combos including a perfect
Lazyboy Flip and a big Paris Hilton
Flip.
