Shenzhen
championship points’ leader had major
problems with baggage, in that it never
arrived at Shenzhen airport! He had to
ride practise in gear he borrowed from
his Rockstar teammate, Libor Podmol!
On the second night, Hannes narrowly
missed the final by finishing in 7th
place. Due to a bent gear lever,
damaged from landing the Volt the
night before, he was only able to ride
the course in second gear and was
unable to shift when needed. With
confidence in his bike low, Hannes
elected to not throw the Volt, but
instead the young German tried
another new trick; the Lazyboy Flip. He
saved this for a big Double-Up at the
end of his run and stomped it clean as
a whistle.
Hannes’ younger brother, 17-year-old
Luc Ackermann was not so successful
in China and couldn’t make the top six
on either day. For Luc, the course was
missing one of the vital features he
needs to put together his best freestyle
runs. With no quarter pipe in Shenzen,
the Husqvarna rider wasn’t able to do
the Flair, which usually gives him a big
advantage over his competitors. Luc
rode the LifeProof Best Whip contest
and the Maxxis Highest Air as well,
and he was pleased with a 3rd place
both days in both side-contests. The
Chinese people cheered frenetically
for the young rider and the demand for
selfies and autographs after the show
was at an all-time high!
The second night saw David Rinaldo
take the win ahead of current FIM
Freestyle MX World Champion Maikel
Melero. Thus, the Frenchman now
leads the world championship overall
standings with 172 points and as
such is the most promising candidate
to win the 2015 world title. Hannes
Ackermann is currently in seventh
place and with three rounds remaining,
is eligible for a top five result.
China is always a great experience,
especially with all the huge cultural
differences that you see around every
corner. The fact that Shenzen boasts
the largest course of the NOTJ season,
and an outdoor one at that, makes
this round all the more special. For
both Hannes and Luc, it is clear that
they want to return next year and once
again throw down at NIGHT of the
