INTERVIEW: KEN BLOCK
racing, so that’s when we decided to make
it a Gymkhana car,” he told us. “It was
already a light tarmac build, so we figured
we would focus on that and just make it
the absolute best Gymkhana car that we
could and bring it out here to the events.
We really focused on the performance side
of things and had Rocket Bunny make the
aero kit for it that turned out incredible.
It’s a really nice, clean build and it’s one of
the most unique Mk2 Escorts in the world
now.”
A lot of Block’s initial Inspiration for the
Escort came from his driving hero, the
WRC legend that is Colin McRae.
“My favourite rally driver was always Colin
McRae. He definitely influenced me to be
the driver I am today.”
Block’s small, RWD European Escort
is almost the mirror opposite to the
Hoonicorn: a huge, American AWD V8
muscle car. We asked him how much
he has to change his driving style for
Gymkhana, when switching between the
two cars?
£ With Ken on Hoonicornduty, it fell to drifter Ryan
Tuerk to take the keys
to the freshly-minted
‘78 Escort for the RWD
category of GRiD
“Completely!” he exclaimed with a chuckle.
“It’s not so much the style as the entire
technique of driving. All Wheel Drive (AWD)
just reacts and drives so differently to Rear
Wheel Drive (RWD). People have been
asking me all day, if I am going to have a
go in the Escort, but it really is difficult to
jump back and forth between the two and
drive them at the highest level. u
