completely destroy all faith in the systems. All the
judges have integrity and passion for FMX which is
why they’re chosen. They just wouldn’t do it. It’s such
a close-knit community, everybody talks and I think
everybody knows that it wouldn’t fly and no-one
would get away with it.
What’s the hardest part of the job?
The hardest part is making those close calls, and
then having to tell a guy who is riding at an awesome,
world class level, throwing some really insane tricks,
looking super stylish, why he didn’t score as well as
the other guy. It’s hard, we have so much respect for
the riders it can be tricky to almost have to criticise
them after doing such a sick run.
What about the best part of your job?
p. Oliver Franke
The best part is definitely seeing the progression of
the sport, being a part of these amazing events and
seeing all the hard work and effort riders have put
in paying off for them. It’s so cool to be able to see
some of the rookies come up through the ranks – on
their journey you know - from struggling to qualify
for their first event to being a contender, to suddenly
fighting for the win and then winning their first main
event – it’s awesome.
When you’re at one of these truly epic events like
Osaka, Japan in 2013, or Sydney, Australia two years
ago, you kind of feel a part of something historic you
know, something that’s never been seen or done
before. Witnessing FMX history live.
When it goes down and at the end of the day you can
say the best guy won, awesome event, everyone’s
happy with the result, you’ve seen the best riding in
the world and everyone’s safe – then I’m stoked and
it’s been a good weekend! T
