CAT-CHING UP
WITH THE FUTURE
KLARIUS shares some thoughts about what the future holds for catalytic converters
(CATs) as a result of the current, post-Brexit political landscape.
Whilst Brexit may cause a number of EU laws to be replaced by
domestic legislation, the safeguarding of emissions components and
standards are unlikely to change much. Euro emissions standards and
type-approval will still remain a benchmark for quality CATs because
it is impractical for the UK to create their own domestic emissions
legislation for a variety of reasons.
THE SENSIBLE CHOICE
UK based OE manufacturers will still want to sell vehicles in Europe and
vice versa without having to adapt vehicles to fit varying regulations.
Furthermore, the UK still needs to accept EU vehicles on its roads,
post-Brexit.
STANDARDISING QUALITY
Currently, it is illegal to fit a non-type-approved CAT for any vehicle
registered after 1 st March 2001.
All CATs by Klarius are type-approved in accordance to EU standards.
This serves as the minimum guarantee that the design and function of a
CAT is reflective of the OE part.
Type-approved CATs will feature an adequate internal precious metal
coating to effectively reduce harmful pollutants from the exhaust
gases, provide longer service lifespans and be compliant to governing
emissions standards. For quality manufacturers of aftermarket CATs,
this benchmark will not change.
THE VERDICT
New-to-range CATs released to the post-Brexit market will still
require type approval. Klarius has invested significantly in research
and development to ensure that every emissions control product is
manufactured to match or exceed the EU type-approval standard.
Recent additions to the range include:
• 312014 – CAT for Astra H 2.0 (2004-2010)
• 323492 – CAT for Peugeot 208 1.2 (2012-2016)
ADVICE TO CUSTOMERS
If manufacturers have to specifically adapt cars for different markets,
production costs are likely to soar and the motorists are left to bear
the burden. Staying with the EU legislation is unquestionably the most
straightforward approach for both the UK and the EU. Therefore,
quality aftermarket CATs for both markets will still adhere to EU type-
approval standards.
