DUAL
MASS
EFFECT
LUK explains common causes for premature DMF failure and how to find cost effective
OE quality replacement solutions when needed.
With approximately 23 million vehicles on UK roads fitted with dual
mass flywheels (DMFs), the demand for aftermarket replacements
remains strong and constant. The current trend towards lighter vehicles,
lower emissions and more engine torque secures prospects for DMF
sales as it offers more driving comfort and reduced fuel consumption.
Despite the technology being introduced more than 30 years ago,
DMFs remain the most effective solution in controlling drivetrain
vibration levels. LuK DMFs are engineered to uphold the technological
heritage in providing driver comfort through optimum noise and
vibration absorption, relaxed low-revolution driving and in turn, relieve
crankshaft and gearbox stress.
COST EFFECTIVE OE REPAIR
When replacing a defective DMF, LuK recommends to replace the
clutch together with it, in order to avoid premature damage to the
corresponding components.
LuK recently introduced a
small range of 12 RepSet
DMFs designed to provide
precision-tuned components
along with the DMF through
a single part number. This
is to ensure all parts work
cohesively after a DMF
replacement. More RepSet
DMFs are currently in the
development pipeline,
scheduled for later release.
Highlights include:
• 600001600 for Audi A3 1.9 (2004-2010)
• 600001700 for Volkswagen Golf 2.0 (2008-2013)
Dual mass flywheels were first introduced over 30 years ago
CAUSES FOR FAULTS & FAILURES
Due to the nature of its operating environment, wear and tear remains
one of the most common causes for DMF failure. However, there are
various factors that can cause damage and lead to premature failure.
The most common factors include;
•
•
•
•
Not rectifying engine misfires
Inappropriate driving styles
Overloading vehicles or towing excessive weight
‘Chipped’ ECUs that falsely promise to increase power or torque
Besides the DMF, the set also contains a clutch disc, clutch pressure
plate, all the bolts needed for replacement (stretch bolts) and a
conventional release bearing or hydraulic concentric slave cylinder
(CSC).
Each RepSet DMF is precision matched in the factory to ensure a
perfect and professional fit – first time, every time.
FITTING SUPPORT
Some installers may choose to use aftermarket ‘conversion kits’
to replace the original DMF. Whilst the added weight will help in
controlling drivetrain vibration, it also pushes the engine to operate
beyond its tested tolerances and specifications which may lead to
damage in other components. To replace DMFs effectively, installers need to know
the precise operating tolerances and bolt torque
settings that are unique in each application.
This information is available on the DMF
CheckPoint App (available for free
download via iTunes and Google Play
Store). By simply entering the part
number, installers are supplied with all the
necessary data required

This is why LuK always advises installers to replace a damaged DMF
with an OE quality replacement. LuK RepSet DMFs are catalogued on the F:Drive and MAM Autocat.
