The spring assister performs a vital function as the suspension approaches its operating limit . If it ’ s damaged or worn , the spring could become coil-bound under extreme compression , transferring its energy directly to the vehicle structure and causing damage to the suspension turret or hub carrier .

A shock absorber leaking oil is often the result of damage to the piston rod seal after road grit enters a split gaiter . Some of the oil and grit is retained within the spring assister structure which gradually degrades , attracting additional contaminants .

When a customer orders shock absorbers , they should also consider renewing the spring assisters and protective gaiters as well . This will help prevent premature damage and prolong the shock absorber ’ s lifespan . The vehicle owner will enjoy peace of mind at MOT test time and future cost savings .

Furthermore , there is no additional work involved in renewing the spring assister and protective gaiter since they have to be removed to gain access to the shock absorber .
