BRAKING TRADITION
Once exclusive to the luxury car market, Electronic Parking Brakes
(EPBs) are now more common within the mass market. BLUE PRINT
explores this opportunity, and what it means for the aftermarket.
With more vehicle manufacturers like VAG, Renault, Ford, BMW
and Hyundai fitting electromagnetic handbrakes in recent years, the
aftermarket is experiencing a growing interest in these components. In
the world of independent garages, technicians are quickly realising that
there are a number of differences in servicing and overhauling these
braking systems.
NECESSARY EXPERTISE TO AVOID A BAD SHOCK
As specific equipment is necessary for any jobs involving EPBs, it is
often out of range for the average home mechanic. Technicians not only
have to be cautious about inhaling brake dust and pressurised brake
fluid escaping when working on calipers, they
also have to be mindful of the risk of high
amperage shock. The system may be
12V, but with a current draw of up to
20 Amps, there is enough electricity
to make even the most seasoned
engineer jump.
TOP TIP
With this in mind, EPBs in
the aftermarket create further
opportunities for motor factors and
well-equipped independent workshops
to offer a service that was previously
exclusive to vehicle dealerships.
It is advisable to connect a battery
support unit as parking brake motors
draw a lot of current (approximately
14-20 amps) when in use.
PERFECTLY PARKED OPPORTUNITIES
OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW
The twin cable and ratchet lever style of parking brakes were
relatively straightforward to repair or replace in comparison to
modern electromagnetic systems that are reliant on solenoids,
sensors and calibration. Consequently, simple tasks such as pad
and disc replacements now require the use of suitable diagnostic
equipment that can activate the ECU to perform the wind-back and
re-engagement process.
Blue Print offers a comprehensive range of over 10,000 braking
components including discs, pads, sensors, fitting kits and more.
