PREVENTING PREMATURE CAMSHAFT WEAR
Even with a top quality, cast iron camshaft, wear and scuffing can occur. AE shares some tips that will help you prevent it from happening prematurely.
It is essential to take care of the engine oil and oil filters in order to ensure that the camshaft is sufficiently lubricated. Oil and filter problems include:
Old or incorrect oil Blockages
It’s important to change the oil in line with the engine manufacturer’s
recommended schedule, as older or contaminated oil is a less
effective lubricant. The wrong grade of oil will also be ineffective.
For example, an oil that has too high a viscosity will have too low a
flow rate. Oil galleries, feed pipes and
drillings can become blocked by
debris – especially if unfiltered or
contaminated oil is flowing around
the system. Blockages will prevent
sufficient lubricant from reaching
the camshafts.
Oil loss
Old or inefficient filter
An old filter will
become progressively
less efficient, as will
a filter blocked with
contaminants. Unfiltered
– potentially dirty – oil will
flow through the bypass
valve instead.
There may be a loss of oil
if components such as the
crankshaft bearings are worn.
This will reduce the amount
of lubricant available to the
camshaft.

LEARN MORE ABOUT TURBOS WITH BTN
A turbocharger can double the power output of an engine, making
vehicles more responsive to drive. As they deliver more air to the
engine, fuel combustion is more thorough and therefore cleaner.
Turbocharged diesel engines produce 50% less NOx and CO2 emissions
than conventional diesel engines.
As turbochargers are powered by exhaust gases, they deliver significant
fuel savings over their naturally aspirated counterparts.
The latest SMMT figures indicate that nearly 50% of all cars and
LCVs in the UK are turbocharged. As a result, it is beneficial for the
aftermarket to get up to speed about turbocharger technology.
BTN Turbo has developed a free turbo training course at:
www.btnturbo.com/training. The course covers all essential
information about turbochargers, troubleshooting for failures, fitting
advice and how they are beneficial for the business.
Equipped with a quiz in every section, people who score 100% get a free
T-shirt that is exclusive from BTN.
BTN Turbos are available from FPS via the F:Drive and MAM Autocat. For more information, please speak with your local FPS representative.
