T UP HAVE A SEAT COMPUTER WOES Q I have an ’87 5.0 LX coupe with low miles, but it sat for a long time with the previous owner. The car has lots of electrical quirks, and my mechanic is telling me it needs a new computer. Who sells them? Should I get a new, used, or rebuilt one? Ford original or after-market? I’ve bought plenty of car parts in my time, but never a computer. My lack of experience is showing, and I could use some help. Jeff Daley Kannapolis, NC A Jeff, you can check your local Ford dealership to see if a computer is available, but chances are the Ford originals are obsolete. If that route doesn’t pan out, check your local auto parts stores (Auto Zone, Advanced Auto Parts, O’Reilly Auto Parts, NAPA), as they sometimes have access to remanufactured computers. I would search for a new-condition computer first, but I would not hesitate purchasing a remanufactured unit. Stay away from a used computer unless you’re able to confirm it does not have the same issues as the one currently in your Mustang. Q I read about you guys online, and I can’t tell you how glad I am to finally have a magazine with nothing but Fox Mustangs. My dad and uncles have been into them for as long as I can remember. They always had hot 5.0s. I own two now, an ’88 GT that runs 12s, and an ’84. Last summer, the seatback on my ’88 broke, and it’s really uncomfortable. Do you know of a salvage yard that specializes in Fox Mustangs so I can get a factory replacement instead of getting this one welded? Stuart Robbins Rome, GA A Stuart, start by searching local classified advertisements such as Craigslist. Finding a seat locally will save money on shipping costs. You can also check with upholstery shops in your area and inquire about the extent of repairs they’re capable of performing. Depending on where the seatback broke, some repairs can be fixed in your own garage. Another solution is to invest in a set of competition seats. This would reduce the weight of your Mustang and add a contemporary, race-inspired look and feel to the interior. Issue 1 FOX Mustang Magazine 89
