PR E PA R ATORY S C HO OL G-News, your fortnightly news bulletin Guildford Grammar School now has its own news crew, in the form of G-News! The G-News team is the brainchild of Year 6 teacher Sam Day and is made up of Year 5 and 6 students who take on the various roles involved in producing a fortnightly news bulletin summarising activities and events around the school. A group of Year 5 and 6 students are learning the ins and outs of putting together a regular news bulletin under the leadership of Mr Sam Day. The team is split into six reporters and five crew. The reporters pitch their story idea to Mr Day and, once approved, get to work. They must do their background homework and learn as much as possible about their story before writing a ‘shot list’ (a list of all the vision and audio that will go into the story). Once their shot list is written, they then set out to organise interviews and record interesting and relevant footage. Next comes writing the voice over. The reporters work together with the editors to go through all the footage so that the words that are being spoken match the vision being shown. It all comes together in the editing studio where the reporters record their voice overs, edit their story together, with the help of our editors, and render it ready for the main bulletin. They generally get three stories out in each episode with the other reporters filling the spots of news anchor and weather presenter. The team get together each week to plan their stories and allocate roles such as writer, presenter, and camera person for each story, and compile a comprehensive news bulletin each fortnight. Some of the stories the G-News team have covered so far include Retro on Swan, Mother’s Day, the history of Lady Day, the FOPS Disco and most recently the story of Ben Carlin and the Half Safe. As well as using the latest camera and audio equipment, the team are also learning about the use of a green screen, with their own green screen set up for use by the news anchor and the weather reporter!
