SENIOR SCHOOL
Reflections on Semester One
Starting at a new school can be daunting and it is no less daunting for students who are transitioning from the
Preparatory School to the Senior School. With a semester now behind them, we asked some of our Year 7 students to
tell us how their first semester in the Senior School has been and their thoughts on the Catalyst program so far.

Transitioned from the Preparatory School Hayley (7St) New to Guildford Grammar School
I love being at Guildford Grammar Senior
School. The teachers gave us a lot of support
with the transition from Preparatory to Senior
School. There is a lot of responsibility put on
students to get to class on time and complete
homework, but as students we need
responsibility, so we are learning a useful skill. New to Guildford Grammar School My transition to Guildford Grammar School
was easier than I expected it to be. At first I
was expecting to feel nervous transitioning
to such a big school, but once I arrived I felt
very welcomed by staff and other students.
Having some people I already knew at the
school also helped me settle in. After the
first week of orientation, and being taken
to every class, I knew exactly where to go
for the rest of the term. With such a large
school, I quite enjoyed making my way
around to each class, as this was different to
my junior school.
My favourite subject so far is the Comfort
Zone Challenge. It is very enjoyable getting
to work with other students to do things that
we haven’t done before such as tribal dance
and public speaking. It is wonderful on an
afternoon to go to the class and have lots of
fun. Our teacher, Ms Goforth, is really nice
and makes this class so enjoyable!
I feel very calm in the Senior School. We
don’t have to stress a lot about having to do
homework, because they don’t overload us
with it. I’m not stressed about anything and
feel very chilled when I turn up to school
because I get to see my great friends in the
morning.

Starting Senior School can be overwhelming,
but everyone at Guildford Grammar School
made it such an easy transition. In my first
weeks of school a lot of staff and students
really helped us new students out, they were
kind and willing to help us get the hang of
things. I have really enjoyed meeting so many
new people and getting to know everyone.
I have found new interests in things I didn’t
know I enjoyed, like cricket and athletics.
Before starting at Guildford Grammar School
I was pretty nervous but also excited. I had
no idea how welcoming everyone would be.
Now looking back at it, it was such a smooth
transition and I had nothing to worry about.
It was very helpful that I found a good group
of friends who helped me through starting
school and I know they will help me in my
future years of schooling as well.
All of the opportunities here are helping me
achieve my personal best, this includes trying
new sports, representing my school in inter-
school competitions, meeting many new
people who have given me good advice and
expanded my knowledge, and the education
here has really stepped up my learning and
made me go outside my comfort zone. My
favourite subject is definitely HASS, because
I find it interesting learning about the history
leading up and shaping our world today, and
my teacher makes learning this very fun and
interesting.
The House is a great way to get to know
people across all the years. Stirling House
is a really social environment and also a
relaxing place to be. You always have lots
of people to talk to in the House, and the
pool table and table tennis are great fun. It is
somewhere I look forward to going each day.
My favourite part of going to Guildford
Grammar School would have to be the
sport. Term 1 was an extremely busy term
with after-school sport, however I was given
the opportunity to play tennis every day
which really improved my game. Also my
team mates were always very supportive at
inter-school matches which made it a positive
experience.
There are going to be lots of different
opportunities at Guildford Grammar School
for me to take part in. I am looking forward
to spending the next six years here and
making the most of my time.
