Beautiful Year 11 and 12 Drama production Beautiful Burnout by Bryony Lavery Directed by Miles Openshaw Beautiful Burnout by Bryony Lavery and directed by Miles Openshaw was a compelling physical performance by Year 11 and 12 Guildford Grammar School and Perth College drama students. The play is set in a boxing gym in Glasgow in 2009/10 and focuses on the boxing dreams of five young people whose working class lives are beset by personal and social struggle and where boxing was a path to success, admiration, achievement. The play presented many exciting performance challenges for the cast, such as learning boxing moves and techniques, physical choreography, and mastering a Glaswegian accent! However, there were strong performances by all members of the cast, due to unwavering commitment and connection to character, which created a visceral production that highlighted the physical skills of the boys. Director, Miles Openshaw, who hails from the United Kingdom where he operated his own theatre company, thoroughly enjoyed working with the cast and brought to bear his amazing background on this intense play. It is always a wonderful process to watch students grow and thrive through performance, gain confidence and understanding, and present theatre work with complete conviction.
