James Coghill (Wb 2000-2004)
With a dream of a greener future, James
and his brother, Michael Coghill (Wb
1998-2002), co-founded Total Green
Recycling (TGR) in 2008. Specialising in
the emerging e-waste industry, TGR offers
recycling solutions for electrical items such
as computers, mobile phones, television sets
and refrigerators. This is important work
as e-waste, on average, is at least 95%
recyclable by weight, but contains toxic and
hazardous materials that are not handled
well by other established waste practices.
TGR now services 53 councils and collects
e-waste from thousands of businesses, and
last year processed 1,800 tonnes. Since
inception, the company has handled 7,800
tonnes of e-waste, 205 tonnes of which

was toxic lead, a material that would have
traditionally found itself in landfill.
With 21 staff members, the company’s
staffing strategy is also worthy of mention.
TGR aims to provide employment for the
long-term unemployed and people with
disabilities.
Looking to the future, James and Michael’s
vision is to make WA the country’s leader in
e-waste recycling by introducing cutting-edge
technologies and practices.
