SENIOR SCHOOL Flour Power We were sitting in the Year 12 Design Photography class running a brainstorming session on creative photography ideas. The photos would become part of a Design portfolio that each Year 12 student needs to put together for the course. After some research we were pretty inspired and had created a list of exciting shots that we wanted to take. One idea involved coloured smoke, another throwing milk up in the air, one with lots of flour and a trampoline and one with coloured ink in water. We managed to take some photos of these ideas at school, but when it came time for the flour and trampoline idea, we didn’t know how we were going to get a trampoline to school. Luckily Mr Lawson put up his hand and organised a trampoline in his paddock and we enjoyed an excursion there and set the shoot up. We had a 15kg bag of flour, a black back drop, coloured smoke bombs and all the cameras and lights you could imagine. First up the boys practiced their jumps. For this type of shot the boys knew they had to land a certain way and stay nice and straight. Next we loaded the trampoline up with flour and the boys jumped on. There were a lot of laughs as the boys were covered in the white dust. They had to hold their breath, jump straight and look natural all at the same time! The cameras were clicking at a fast pace and it took many, many attempts to get the jumping just right, but we got there. The sheep on the property must have been quite entertained watching the commotion. It was a hot day and some of the flour was sticking to the boys’ foreheads and making dough! We had a great time and were able to capture many jumps and were happy with the day’s shoot. A special thank you goes to Mr Castaldini and Mr and Mrs Lawson for their help.
