Creative problem solving
challenge helps Perth
Children’s Hospital
Our Year 4 students explored their creativity as part of their
creative thinking project last year, working through set problems
to come up with a creative solution. As a result, a group
of students in 4W held a Christmas decoration sale during
Grandparents’ Day, selling a wide range of Christmas decorations
that were donated by one of the parents. The students managed
to raise over $1000 for the Perth Children’s Hospital.
The class was presented with the challenge of working in a team
to write and perform a play explaining how they would use the
donated decorations to raise money for their nominated charity.
Of the five teams competing, Santa’s Little Elves were selected as
the winners following their performance and song about Jake,
a young sick boy in hospital, whose illness was cured by funds
raised through a Christmas decoration sale. Santa’s Little Elves was
made up of Angus, Tatum, Ethan and Summer.
The students formed a strong team, each taking on a set role and
working together to write and perform the play and a rap song!
They selected the Perth Children’s Hospital as their charity and
donated all of the money raised at the sale to the hospital, taking
a vote on which unit or department of the hospital they would
like to send the money to.
When asked why they selected the Perth Children’s Hospital as
their charity the team agreed that every child deserves to be
happy and healthy and this is one way that they can help the sick
children.
The students ran all aspects of the sale themselves, with all 4W
students involved in some aspect of the day. Santa’s Little Helpers
prepared rosters for the day, arranged a cash float, set up the
stands, served customers and advertised the sale as part of their
project.

To add some maths challenges into the mix, prices for all
decorations were in dollars and cents, so that students had to work
out the correct totals and give change!
Lyrics to Christmas Day
By Angus, Tatum, Ethan and Summer
Happy peace, happy joy
Christmas Day brings us together
Woohoo, we have family
We have friends
Santa Clause comes down our chimney and eats cookies
YUM!
Santa Clause comes down our chimney and eats our yummy
cookies
He goes to Guildford Grammar School
He does not wear a skirt
And he doesn’t get hurt
Because he’s in a pool and he also does not drool
And he has three secret rules!
Number 1: Be kind and compassionate
Number 2: Donate some money
Number 3: Say your prayers
Bow bow bow
Say your prayers
Bow bow bow
Say your prayers
Pch pch pch pch praaaaaaaaaaa (rap style!)
