SENIOR SCHOOL Under a Rest! Year 10 student Taj Johnstone (10St) offered to write a story for this edition of the Forward, focusing on some of the staff in the School of Music. Taj developed a set of questions for each staff members with some interesting responses! Mr Kieran Hurley Head of Music Where did you grow up? What instruments do you play and for how long have you played them? Connecticut, United States of America. Funny or strange music moment? I have played trombone for 37 years. I was once doing a gig when the drummer had an argument with the band director and walked out just before my tenor sax solo. What is your favourite instrument? Definitely the trombone. What got you into music? Mr Martin (Marty) Pervan When I was in primary school I got a chance to play, I did and I still do! What instruments do you play and for how long have you played them? What are your favourite pieces or styles of music to play? Jazz-Fusion or any Miles Davis. Where did you grow up? Brisbane, Queensland. Funny or strange music moment? Once I made my slide fly into the trombone section! Ms Christina Browning. Where did you grow up? Trumpet for 33 years, saxophone for 28 years, trombone for 26 years and everything else for varying amounts of time. The hills of Hobart, Tasmania. Funny or strange music moment? I was once doing a performance when I had to stand on the stool (Piano seat). Mr Brad Swope What instruments do you play and for how long have you played them? Saxophone for 30 years, flute and clarinet for nearly 30 years. What is your favourite instrument? Saxophone without a doubt. What got you into music? My first private teacher when he showed me lots of Big Band Jazz. Mr Kieran Hurley. Ms Christina Browning What are your favourite pieces or styles of music to play? Funk or Jazz with lots of horns. What instruments do you play and for how long have you played them? What is your favourite instrument? Trumpet. What got you into music? My second trumpet teacher. What are your favourite pieces or styles of music to play? Pianoforte for 51 years. Anything that sounds good. What is your favourite instrument? Where did you grow up? Piano or cello. Woodbridge, WA. What got you into music? Funny or strange music moment? My father was an organist so music surrounded me my whole life. What are your favourite pieces or styles of music to play? The music of Johan Sebastian Bach (classical). Mr Martin Pervan. Mr Brad Swope. I was at a winery in the Swan Valley and my trumpet’s spit valve broke which sounded like a large hole had formed in my instrument so I asked the crowd if they had any hair ties I could borrow to hold it down and I now own a stranger’s hair tie! 15
