WHILE studying Genesis chapter 16, I was delighted to learn fresh truths about my God. Here is what I learned about the God Who sees us.

Longing for a promised baby, Sarah gave her maid Hagar to her husband Abraham. But, after Hagar conceived, she looked down on her mistress. In response, Sarah became angry and mistreated her.

Desperate, the pregnant Hagar fled into the wilderness. Fear, anger, and confusion swirled through her mind. She had probably never felt further from God in her whole life.

Yet, when the Lord sought her out in the desert, she discovered that He is not a God made by human hands or human imaginations. Instead, He is…

-The God Who seeks us

"And the angel of the Lord found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur." (v. 7)

Why does the Bible say that he “found her”? Didn’t He already know where she was? Of course He did. But, He took the time to personally step into her life and meet her in the wilderness.

I don’t know about you, but I’m so grateful to have a God who meets me right where I am. There have certainly been times when I, like Hagar, have fled into the wilderness. I felt lonely, confused, and completely helpless. Yet God so tenderly met me there and drew me to Himself with cords of love.

-The God Who listens to us

"And he said, Hagar, Sarai's maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai." (v. 8)
