Wally fever hits
BookWeek
Term 3 saw Wally fever sweep through the Preparatory School as
the Annual Book Week Celebrations got under way. This year’s Book
Week theme was ‘Books Light up our World’. The students were
involved in many activities to celebrate the importance of reading
and literacy and the enjoyment provided by sitting down with a
good book.
Book Week started early in Term 3 with a Scholastic Book Fair all
about ‘Exploring an Ocean of Books’. It was a highly successful
Book Fair, selling just over $9,000 worth of books, with our students
continuing to affirm their love of reading. The Library was packed
before and after school with students wanting to purchase many
fantastic books. A big thank you to all the parent volunteers who
assisted during this week. Many an excited child headed home with
their books, ready to read the hours away!
The most anticipated part of our Book Week celebrations is always
the Book Week Dress-up Assembly. This year the dress up day took
a twist, with the whole Preparatory School dressing up as the much
loved character Wally, from the book Where’s Wally? It was an
amazing sight at assembly to see nearly 500 students and teachers
all looking the same! Word spread about what was happening here
at Guildford Grammar School and a photo made it into Monday’s
West Australian newspaper! Students also participated in a ‘Wally
Search’ around the school, all trying to locate a special Wally in order
to win a prize.
James Foley, children’s author and illustrator, visited the Preparatory
School for three days during Book Week to share his passion for
books with the entire school. James mesmerised the students with
his ability to talk about his famous characters and draw numerous
pictures of them at the same time. Students were taken through
the process of creating a picture book; from the hours of sketching
characters to the final product. Students were given the privilege
of viewing James’ new book My Dead Bunny and watching him
‘zombify’ all sorts of creatures. Students were then shown the tricks
of the trade of how to draw ‘zombified’ creatures themselves, an
activity that excited everyone!
Book Week 2015 was once again a fantastic success and I very
much look forward to what 2016 has in store.

Dads’ Big Breakfast
This year’s Dads’ Big Breakfast was a great success, enjoyed by more than
750 dads and students dressed in the colours of their favourite sports teams.
Spread across the Preparatory School rugby field and surrounding the Foundation
Pavilion, the students and their dads enjoyed egg and bacon rolls, yoghurt, juices, tea
and coffee while listening to the great music put on by the Senior School’s G Jazz band.
This year’s event was the biggest Dads’ Big Breakfast the School has ever hosted and it
was exceptionally well organised thanks to the events team of Tracey Roki, Tim Hewson
and Lesley Diamond-Sutherland as well as the FOPS mums and the Year 12 Prefects
who helped serve the rolls on the day.
Enjoying the great we
