SPORT The Undefeated 9A Soccer Team The 9A Soccer Team remained undefeated throughout the 2015 season, maintaining their top position on the PSA ladder! The boys, ably led by Adam Halliday, took on coaching points in training and during games, and maintained high standards for themselves in both environments. One of the areas of development their coach recognised early on was their defensive structure, where they needed work on positioning and what to do in controlled possession. Throughout the season they showed improvements as a team unit, but in particular Sam Cattani (9Be), Matt Butcher (9Fr), Sam Weston (9He) and Chris van der Groen (9Ha) led the defense. The boys succeeded in games by effectively finding passes into the midfield, whereas previously it was a case of just launching the ball up the field with limited direction and little effect. Throughout the season the boys demonstrated improvement in their team cohesion, which has made for a great team environment both as a unit and socially. The boys can be extremely happy with how they have performed throughout the season, with Laurence Todd (9SG), Sam Weston (9He) and Henry Wilkinson-Derums (9Ha) pushing into the 1st team. The future looks promising for these players and their Guildford Grammar School teams. Team/Player Highlights: • Player variation: There are a number of players who can be quite versatile when it comes to positioning on the field without hesitation or complaints. Notable players are Austin Shephard (9He) and Ryan Stone (9Be) who did what they were asked and got the job done on numerous occasions. • Consistency on the pitch: Reliable, consistent performances from Peter Pilkadaris (9St), Laurence Todd (9SG), and Sam Weston (9He) kept the team going through rough patches of games from week-to-week. • Goal scoring: As much as not conceding goals is important, being able to score goals is necessary for a top team. Henry Wilkinson-Derums (9Ha), Stephen Ntoumenopoulos (9Ha), and Ryan Stone (9Be) contributed to some convincing wins throughout the season, but also provided some crucial goals in the tighter games.
