regatta
On Saturday November 7 2015, for the
sixteenth year, the School hosted the
Guildford on Swan Regatta. As has become
the custom in recent years, spectators
viewed the races from a number of vantage
points along the Swan River, watching crews
from all seven PSA schools compete for
advantage over the challenging 3km and
6.5km courses. Cool conditions ensured
that crews were able to compete at their
best, with fast times in all events and new
course records in the 1st VIII and the Year
10A VIII events.
day, highlighted by the fact that all seven
of our racing VIII’s placed in the top three,
with the 2nd VIII winning their event.
Furthermore, six racing quads also came
off the water with sound performances
with four of them placing in the top three.
The Michael Patton trophy, awarded to the
school with the highest aggregate points
for the day, went to Trinity College on 206
points, with Guildford Grammar School
finishing second by the slimmest of margins
on 205 points and Scotch College finishing
third on 188 points.
The legendary GRA morning tea was once
again a focal point for the social aspect of
this regatta, which brings together parents
and supporters from all PSA schools and the
broader rowing community. The Guildford
Grammar School rowers had an outstanding
The morning was made particularly
memorable for one of the stalwarts of
Guildford Rowing, Michael Logue (SG
81-85), who had a quad scull named in
his honor just prior to the regatta. Michael
has been involved with rowing since his
own school days, when he rowed in the
now infamous 1985 1st VIII. After leaving
the School, Mick went on to win state and
national titles in all boat classes, rowing as
a Kings Cup oarsman five times between
1990 and 1994. Recently we have had the
privilege of Mick’s expertise as he returned to
the School to contribute to our program as a
winning 10A VIII coach and the coach of the
1st VIII. He also contributed to the Guildford
rowing talent pool with sons Jonah (10SG)
and Griffin (12SG), outstanding oarsmen
in their own right, both completing two
consecutive seasons as 1st VIII rowers. Our
warmest congratulations and thanks to Mick.
