The Old Guildfordians’ Tree, Thwaites Centre courtyard The courtyard outside of the new Thwaites Centre and Headmaster’s Administration, adjacent to the water feature, was identified as a key focal point for the School. It was decided that the OGA would fund the planting of what would become a significant tree there, to create a symbol and a visual reminder of the strong relationship between the School and Old Guildfordians. As the tree grows and develops strong roots, a number of metaphors could be drawn on to highlight the growing relationship between the School, its students and Old Guildfordians. It is hoped the tree will become a landmark at the School and that everyone will know it as the “Old Guildfordians’ Tree”. The variety of tree chosen is Delonix Regia (Poinciana), and while it is now a young tree, it will grow to become a magnificent feature of the Thwaites Centre and it will fill the courtyard with vivid red flowers when it blooms. A competition amongst Old Guildfordians was held to choose the wording for a plaque at the tree’s base, wording that would reinforce the connection between Old Guildfordians, current students and the School. We congratulate Flynn Schulstad (Be 1985-1997) who won the competition, for encapsulating the message with the following well-chosen words: Forward into the future, Carried by the past. This has been a tremendously popular addition to the centre and the first season’s crop, under the care of these young students, looks very healthy and certainly delicious. The aim of this bursary is to nurture exceptional students who have been selected and are required to travel to represent at the elite level in sporting, cultural or academic pursuits. This representation needs to occur outside of the School’s usual program, and each bursary is to a maximum of $500. There is an o
