Year 6 students meet Governor General in Canberra
Twenty eight lucky students from Year 6,
along with four members of staff, spent the
first week of the September school holidays
exploring Canberra and Sydney.
There were many highlights on the tour.
We were privileged to meet the Governor
General, Sir Peter Cosgrove, at Government
House in Canberra as well as Mr Ken Wyatt,
our Federal Member for Hasluck.
Day one started with a ride around Lake
Burley Griffin. Nurse Holly was ecstatic,
with no serious incidents on the bike ride.
The evening’s entertainment featured injury
free ice skating.
Day four was a more formal occasion, with
all students and staff in formal attire for
our visit to the Australian War Memorial.
Freya Sander, Lydia Dutton, William van
den Wall Bake and Joshua James were
selected to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the
Unknown Soldier.
We visited Parliament House and students
enjoyed participating in a heated debate in
the Senate. The topic was whether or not
unhealthy food snacks should be advertised
when children’s television shows are
broadcast.
Freya and Joshua lay a wreath.
area on foot, which culminated in the
Sydney Harbour Bridge pylon look out (89
metres above the harbour).
The students’ etiquette and manners were
commented on by many of the presenters
at places we visited and the staff were
extremely proud of the Guildford Grammar
School students throughout the whole tour.

The tour finished in Sydney. Staying at the
YHA in The Rocks, we explored this historic
IPSHA Speakers Challenge

At the recent IPSHA Speakers Challenge, Gabrielle Farrant,
Jackson McBride and William van den Wall Bake represented
the School with credit, both in the manner they delivered their
speeches and in the positive way they presented themselves. William
was awarded a silver medal, for being runner up in his section of
the competition, and Gabrielle and Jackson were awarded bronze
medals in their respective sections. The competition was won by
Teliah Godfrey from John Wollaston Anglican Community School.
