The “good old days”
are still “the good old days.”

Friday, Sept. 29 – Sunday, Oct. 8
When I was a child the prospect of going to the Dixie
Classic Fair was as exciting as the thought of going to the
State Fair in Raleigh. Those were the days when a trip from
King, NC to Winston Salem wasn't something that was
done on a daily basis...it took some planning. Every year
we looked forward to the Dixie Classic Fair as much
(almost) as we looked forward to Christmas! It was such an
event every year that we actually all got new outfits (our
“fair” clothes) to wear.
I can remember holding my breath on the drive from King
to Winston and exhaling only when the lights from the
Ferris Wheel came into view. It was a big “Wow!” for a
child in those days.
As an adult, I still feel the thrill of a child when I enter the
fairgrounds and smell the food on the food court, and see all
the brilliant flashing lights. For a moment in time, cares slip
away and the child in me comes out to play. The “good old
days” are still “the good old days” when the Dixie Classic
Fair opens its gates!
