I was walking around a store today collecting various household
items and as I made my last few selections, I noticed the center aisle
of the store had been devoted to Halloween candy. I couldn’t
believe it. I stared at shelves and shelves of sugary temptations
mentally racking my brain as to what month it was. Yep, it’s still
summer. As Americans, we’ve become accustomed to the
commercialization of every holiday and life event. But, I can’t deny
that the presence of candy prompted the cogs of my brain to begin
whirling rapidly. We’ve all been told by our parents and elders to
cherish each day, because you’re going to wake up gray one day and
wonder where the time went. While I’m not gray, it’s getting harder
to deny the inevitability that such a day is quickly approaching. Not
too long ago, I was chatting with a friend about the troubles of
wishing your life away. I mentioned to her that it seems like I live
for Friday afternoons. The catchy tunes on the radio glamorizing
weekend nights or the plethora of weekend festivities don’t make it
any easier to cherish Tuesday night nearly as much. But, am I
willing to wish my life away for 52 days? Yes my friends, there are
only 52 Fridays this year. How many weeks have we wished away
for the promise of a relaxing, exciting, or productive weekend? I
don’t relish the thought. But, as I sit here troubled by the time I’ve
wasted, I realize that I have to cherish the present, before it too
becomes time gone by.
