Metamorphosis of the Butterfly
A transformation from something small and grounded to a beautiful insect of flight, this is
what occurs when the caterpillar goes through metamorphosis. The transformation of the
caterpillar to the butterfly has amazed scientists, and all those who look on, for many years.
The change begins after the 2nd life stage, that of being a caterpillar. This stage is filled with
eating. A caterpillar starts eating as soon as they hatch, even eating the leaf that they are born
on. The caterpillar eats until it has reached its full length and weight.
Now the 3rd stage can begin. They form themselves into a pupa, also known as a
chrysalis. It may seem like the larva is now resting but the fact is that a remarkable
transformation is taking place. The tissues, limbs, and organs have all been changed by the
time pupa is finished. The newly formed butterfly is now ready to emerge. When first coming
out of the pupa, the butterflies wings are soft and folded against its body. Soon after the
butterfly stretches its wings it gets the blood pumping in order to get the wings working.
They usually master flying within three or four hours and then they are on their way.
