Jay D’Amico
FOOTHILLS
HW
For most of his recording history as a leader, pianist/composer/arranger Jay D’Amico has been in mostly trio or solo
settings. This time out, Jay has chosen to have a quintet. As much as I’ve enjoyed some of his previous recordings
(“From The Top”, “Envisage”, “Ponte Novello”, “Tuscan Prelude” and “Nocturne”), there’s something very intriguiging
about his latest effort, “tango caliente”. Among the eight compositions in this package, most of the compositions have a
calming and alluring effect; well, at least on me.
The program commences with the title track “Tango Celiente”. It is indeed a tango with Andrew Sterman playing tenor
saxophone and trumpeter/flugelhornist Richie Vitale harmonizing over the trio of piano, bass and drums. “Etruscan
Call” is a haunting ballad that simple relaxes and sooths the soul.
Next there’s “23rd & 8th” which gives Tim Horner some time to stretch out on his drum kit. This is a nice bop oriented
selection.
